10th Grade English
This course engages students in a comprehensive exploration of English Language Arts through the modes of reading, writing, grammar and usage, and speaking and listening. It is designed to help students become confident readers, writers, thinkers, and communicators.
The course is structured in thematic units that focus on essential questions. Readings will include a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction, poetry, and drama. Texts include beloved classics as well as contemporary pieces. Students will engage in critical thinking skills and 21st century collaboration practices, while covering the Iowa Standards for English Language Arts. Students will work to develop writing skills, through the practice of composing creative pieces of fiction and poetry in addition to expository papers using an MLA format and citing sources of information. Writings will establish knowledge of standard grammar and usage as well as a sense of audience and purpose. Students will also engage in speaking and exercise listening skills through active discussions and oral presentations. Vocabulary work is derived from reading selections and from lists that prepare students for college and career. Students and guardians will be provided with standards-aligned progress reports throughout the course, as well as an opportunity to reflect upon strengths and areas for improvement. |
